Five voices in a tiny Dordogne chapel
For anyone who enjoys discovering music away from the conventional concert hall, this could be one of the loveliest cultural evenings of September.
L’Écume des Sons comes to the little Chapelle Saint-Clair de Parisot, near Villeréal, for an intimate concert built around five interwoven voices.
The performance explores the way individual vocal colours meet, cross and complement one another, with the natural acoustics of the chapel becoming part of the experience. The programme is classified locally under vocal/choral and classical music, although the organisers’ emphasis is very much on the interaction of the five voices rather than a conventional large choir.
The setting is an important part of the evening. Rather than a large theatre, the audience hears the singers in the historic Chapelle de Parisot, creating the sort of close relationship between performer, architecture and audience that is particularly suited to unaccompanied or closely arranged vocal music.
Afterwards, the organisers invite the audience to stay for a complimentary verre de l’amitié — quite literally a friendly glass together after the performance.
Make an evening of Villeréal
For guests at Le Petit Capelier, we’d suggest making this more than simply a trip to a concert.
Head towards Villeréal during the late afternoon, wander around the medieval bastide and its remarkable timber-framed market hall, have an early dinner, then continue to Parisot for the 20:30 concert.
It’s exactly the sort of small-scale local experience that’s easy to miss when visiting the Dordogne in high summer: five voices, an old chapel, a September evening in the countryside and a glass together afterwards.
Advance booking isn’t stated as compulsory, but Villeréal’s mairie recommends reserving to help the organisers manage the audience, so I would advise LPC guests to book.
Planning your stay around local events
There is always something happening around Le Petit Capelier. Issigeac’s famous Sunday market takes over the medieval village every week, while Bergerac, Eymet, Villeréal and Castillonnès host regular markets, brocantes, concerts, exhibitions and festivals throughout the year.
During the summer, look out for marchés gourmands and village fêtes, where long communal tables, local food, Bergerac wines and live music make for wonderfully relaxed evenings. The vineyards around Monbazillac and Bergerac also host tastings, concerts and special events throughout the season.
We update this calendar regularly as new events are announced, including some of the smaller local happenings that can be surprisingly difficult to discover online.
